Did you know that I have two incredible jobs? By day, I work virtually as a pediatric sleep coach helping parents teach their little ones to fall asleep independently. By night, I am an overnight postpartum doula helping parents navigate the newborn stage with a little extra sleep. I help with breastfeeding, bottle feeding, baby laundry, washing pump parts, soothing, burping, swaddling, etc., so parents can get the rest they need to care for their newborns throughout the day. Naps are hard. Full 🛑 Anyone who has had a baby can agree that naps are tricky and sometimes unpredictable, especially if you’re winging it. Sleep begets sleep. It’s something I say on repeat to my sleep clients. The better a baby sleeps during the day, the better they will sleep at night. It isn’t always as easy as it sounds. There comes a moment in a newborn’s life when they are way more interested in your face than they are sleeping. They probably seem happy and awake, smiling even, but it’s short lived and a minute later they are screaming, arching their back and completely overtired. You may wonder how you missed it? They didn’t seem tired at all. This is why wake windows are so important. It is so easy to miss a sleepy cue from your baby. It doesn’t take much time for a happy baby to become overtired, and once they are overtired it’s very hard to get them to sleep.
